PM Rama, Greek counterpart Tsipras meet in Brussels, discuss ways to solve existing disputes

TIRANA, May 25 /ATA/ – Prime Minister Edi Rama met with his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras on the sidelines of the Thursday’s NATO summit in Brussels.

Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Albania and Greece, Ditmir Bushati and Nikos Kotzias, also attended the meeting.

During their meeting, the two Prime Ministers highlighted the nature and strategic importance of the Albanian-Greek ties and the role of friendship between the two neighbouring nations as a bridge of peace and stability and progress of the region’s Euro-Atlantic integration.

Rama and Tsipras discussed progress of bilateral relations, voicing support for an initiative launched by the foreign ministers of both countries to establish an intensive consultations mechanism in order to address pending issues inherited from the past and further strengthen bilateral ties.

The two sides put emphasis on the specific role of Albanian community in Greece, praising important steps towards social and economic integration of Albanians in Greece.

Prime Minister Rama stressed the need for progress towards finding solutions to existing disputes between the two neighbouring countries in respect of the best European and international law practices.

“Greece has supported Albania and we want Greece to keep on being a strong supporter of Albania’s EU membership process,” Rama said.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras expressed his country’s strong support for Albania’s state-building reforms and the importance he attaches to the respect for the rights of Albania’s Greek minority.

The two sides agreed that finding concrete solutions with a direct impact on the growth of the welfare of the two nations will strengthen trust and deter the two countries from the conflicting rhetoric of the past.
